What a dog’s pedigree papers mean and why they are so important

Every time I have a litter, there are always people who write to me:
“Could you sell a puppy without papers? We don’t need them, we’re not going to dog shows anyway.”

But here is the most important part: a dog’s papers are not meant for dog shows. They are meant for you.
This request is completely understandable. Most people simply want a loyal family companion, not a champion.

However, pedigree papers have nothing to do with being required to attend shows. Papers are not a luxury or an unnecessary extra – they are a guarantee of the dog’s identity and heritage. They show who the puppy’s parents are, what health tests were performed, and ensure that the puppy was born in a responsibly planned, safe environment.

Why papers are necessary even if you only want a family pet

1. Papers confirm the puppy’s pedigree

They work like the dog’s passport – showing its ancestors and proving that the puppy truly belongs to the breed you are choosing.

2. Health tests – for your peace of mind

Purebred puppies with papers have parents who have undergone mandatory health examinations.
This significantly reduces the risk of hereditary diseases, joint issues, and many other problems.

A puppy without papers usually comes from accidental litters where:
– the parents’ health is unknown,
– the lineage is unknown,
– the genetics are unknown.

Such puppies may grow up with unexpected health or behavioral issues.

3. Papers do not cost much

But they reflect the entire responsible breeding process that starts long before the puppy is born.

What actually makes up the price of a purebred puppy?

Not the papers.
The price comes from the enormous amount of work and responsibility that begins even before mating:

  • health checks of the parents,
  • genetic tests,
  • choosing the right stud,
  • travel for mating,
  • veterinary care during pregnancy,
  • whelping or surgical delivery,
  • sleepless nights,
  • puppy socialization,
  • feeding and caring for the mother,
  • creating a safe environment and positive experiences for the puppies.

And beyond all that – a lifetime responsibility for every puppy.
A responsible breeder never sells a puppy and disappears. They stay with you.

Why are cheap puppies without papers such a big risk?

“Cheaper” often means that the dog pays the real price.
In such litters, you often see:

  • bitches bred without rest,
  • no health tests performed,
  • unknown puppy origins,
  • puppies raised without socialization or proper care,
  • the main goal is to breed as much as possible, sell as fast as possible, and earn more.

Later, social media fills with posts like “giving away an alleged Labrador,” often with behavioral or health problems owners cannot handle.

Papers are a guarantee that your puppy was born and raised in the right place

I cannot skip pedigree papers – every purebred puppy receives them. They are part of the dog’s identity.
They are your guarantee that the puppy was born in an environment where it was cared for, safe, and given everything required.

In Lithuania, the only organization issuing international (FCI) pedigree documents is LKD – the Lithuanian Kennel Club.
Only this organization ensures that the papers are authentic, internationally recognized, and confirm that the dog is truly purebred.

What documents must a buyer receive?

  • LKD/F.C.I Pedigree Certificate
  • Sale/Purchase Contract
  • Vaccination Passport 👇 (Pet Passport)

And finally – why is this important to me?

Breeding, for me, is not a job but a commitment.
I want every family that takes one of my puppies to feel secure, and to know they have someone they can always reach out to. I care about the puppy not only when it is little, but also after it leaves for its new home.

That’s why I say this sincerely: pedigree papers are not “documents for the sake of documents.”
They are a guarantee that your dog was born and raised in a place where it was safe, cared for, and loved. And that its life began with warmth and responsibility.
