I often get this question over the phone: Labrador or Golden Retriever – so what is the difference between these two breeds?
As you may have guessed – these are two different retriever breeds.
Let me explain:
These two breeds, which look very similar at first glance, belong to the same FCI Group VIII – Gun Dogs, which includes 6 retriever breeds:
1. Labrador Retrievers

2. Golden Retrievers

3. Curly-Coated Retrievers

4. Flat-Coated Retrievers

5. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

6. Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Let’s analyze the differences between the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever.
These retriever “cousins” are active and friendly sporting dogs, full of love, energy, and a great sense of humor! But do you know how they differ?
Sweet Labrador Retriever or kind-hearted Golden Retriever: which one suits you best?
Both breeds were originally bred as hunting dogs and companions. The difference may seem obvious, yet many people cannot distinguish between a Labrador Retriever and a Golden Retriever, because they look so much alike.
“Goldens” and “Labradors” are exceptional companions outdoors, in sports, and as family members.
Regardless of the breed, they require a lot of attention and training.
People often mistakenly believe that Labradors or Goldens are naturally very intelligent breeds and will grow up smart on their own. But training, even minimal, is essential! The more you communicate with your dog, the stronger your bond will be, and soon you’ll understand each other from just a glance or a movement. Without training, any dog can turn into a little monster.
So, when you look at the adorable puppy photos of Labrador or Golden Retrievers, it can be very difficult to decide which one would make the better life companion.
The more you learn about these breeds’ shared traits, health, and character, the more likely you are to make the right choice!
IMPORTANT! Labradors and Golden Retrievers should never show aggression.
They make excellent companions, guide dogs, and rescue animals, but they are entirely unsuited for guard dog duties.
Similarities Between Labradors and Golden Retrievers
If you are an active person, whether you choose a Labrador or a Golden Retriever, there is no difference – either one will be a perfect companion!
However, if you are less active, a Golden Retriever may be the better choice. Goldens are more relaxed and independent; they cherish every moment with their beloved owner.
Other similarities:
- Both Labradors and Golden Retrievers can live in a large house with a fenced yard or in a small apartment, as long as they are close to their owner.
- They are wonderful family pets and great with children.
- These dogs get along well with other pets.
- All retrievers are strong swimmers, as they were bred to retrieve birds for hunters from water or marshes.
- Both breeds live about 10–16 years.
- They share similar health issues such as allergies, joint problems, hip and elbow dysplasia. Labradors are more prone to obesity, while Golden Retrievers face congenital heart defects and cancer more often.
Differences Between Labradors and Golden Retrievers
Although they are retriever cousins, Labradors and Goldens originated from different parts of the world. Labradors come from Newfoundland Island, in the easternmost province of Canada, Labrador.
Golden Retrievers have three types – originating in Great Britain, the USA, and Canada.
One difference between Labradors and Goldens is the shape of the muzzle: Goldens have a narrower muzzle with a finer jaw, while Labradors have a broader jaw and a more cheerful expression. Both have large, strong noses!
Coat
Both breeds have a double coat and shed at least twice a year. But if we had to award a medal for “most shedding,” the winner is clearly the Golden Retriever – perfect for people who enjoy vacuuming and whose favorite fashion accessory is dog hair!
Golden Retrievers’ coat is shiny, wheat-golden in color, soft, silky, and quite long. It’s especially long on the neck, ears, and cheeks. Luxurious feathering adorns their legs, neck, thighs, and tail. This decorative, water-resistant coat reveals their noble heritage.
Labrador Retrievers, with their shorter coat, also shed twice a year. Their coat is dense, straight, and uniform in length, with a thick undercoat. It is somewhat coarse and straight. Their skin produces natural oils, which make the coat water-resistant. The sleek coat helps them glide easily while swimming, dries quickly after shaking, and provides great thermoregulation.
Colors
Labrador Retrievers officially come in three coat colors:
- Black
- Chocolate (brown)
- Yellow (ranging from pale cream to deep golden)
Because of the yellow-golden color, Labradors are often mistaken for Golden Retrievers.
Golden Retrievers, according to the breed standard, come only in golden shades. However, the tones vary from very light cream to dark golden or copper-red.
Tail
The Labrador’s tail is otter-like, thick at the base and tapering towards the tip, covered with short dense fur. When healthy, the dog carries it level with the body, but when happy, it wags it high and enthusiastically. Labradors are famous for their constant tail wagging! Their tail works like a rudder while swimming, but beware – it’s powerful enough to clear your coffee table in seconds!
The aristocratic Golden Retriever only slightly raises its tail above its back when excited. Its elegant, feathered tail flows like a plume, gracefully waving – though it can also be a hazard for misplaced items.
Character
The Labrador Retriever loves to play and fool around but also seems to follow the rule: “There’s a time to work and a time to play.” They need moderate exercise, learn sports easily, and are gifted with excellent memory, sharp intelligence, and intuition.
Many experts refer to Labradors as “people-oriented dogs.” They are excellent workers, capable of pulling sleds, retrieving fish, and performing various tasks. Open, straightforward, and endlessly trusting, Labradors are eager to please their owners and obey instantly, without hesitation.
From puppyhood to old age, Labradors are playful, carefree, and family-oriented. They excel in hunting, sports, and love the company of children and other pets. With training, a Labrador can become a devoted, attentive, and obedient companion.
Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, appear to have inherited the refined manners of English nobility. They are calm, dignified, endlessly loyal, and thoughtful in every situation. They obey commands, but often prefer to consider their options and choose the most effective approach to a task. This isn’t stubbornness, but rather their regal way of acting with deliberation and composure.
Important: Labradors and Golden Retrievers should not be kept chained or isolated in a kennel! These breeds need constant contact with people.
Family Suitability
As you can see, Labradors and Goldens have quite different personalities. Which one suits you better depends on your family.
- Labradors are better for families with older children, as their strength and energy might overwhelm toddlers. However, they are highly sensitive to children’s abilities and adjust their behavior accordingly.
- Goldens, being calmer, make wonderful nannies even for small children and are also well-suited for older people.
Summary
Both breeds excel in rescue operations, guide work, therapy, and hunting.
Golden Retrievers and Labradors are indispensable in canine therapy (rehabilitation facilitated by specially trained dogs). Interacting with these compassionate, attentive animals offers invaluable benefits for children facing mental, physical, or psychological challenges.
- A Golden Retriever is perfect for those who want a loyal, loving, gentle, and calm friend. They are intelligent, thoughtful, and serene – yet they still need long walks and play, just like Labradors.
- A Labrador Retriever is playful, energetic, practical, and among the best working dogs. They are widely used in customs, police work, drug and explosives detection, and tracking. They rarely hesitate to follow commands, unlike Goldens, who tend to reflect first.
In short:
- Labradors are like tireless football players.
- Goldens are like romantic poet-dreamers.
Choosing a pet must be a responsible decision – the dog will become a full family member, and the owner must respect the breed’s needs. The temperament and requirements are far more important than looks.
Among dog owners, there’s a humorous way to tell them apart:
“Sit both breeds on a riverbank and throw a stick into the water. The Labrador will already be in the river while the stick is still in the air, while the Golden will calmly evaluate the current, speed, sky, scents in the air, recall the weather forecast – and only then jump in.”As you guessed, the second one is the Golden Retriever.
We have described two of the most popular and beloved dog breeds worldwide. Now it’s up to you to decide which one suits you best – the Labrador Retriever or the Golden Retriever.
Remember – whether you choose a Labrador or a Golden Retriever, the most important thing is love, care, and consistent training.
